PRs for RoadRunners at Home

On the day of the Wolf Pack Invite at River Walk, CSUB was having it's own invite and only home meet. Despite the heat, Juniors Arianna Celis and Casey Glassey each recorded personal best times to lead the CSUB cross country team to a third place team finish behind Pepperdine and Westmont. Celis crossed the line in sixth place with a time of 18:30.20. Glassey was right behind her, placing seventh in 18:32.60.

Senior Lina Nuñez was the third CSUB runner to cross the line, finishing 16th (19:33.20). Freshman Cecilia Lopez was 19th in 20:00.70.

Up next, CSUB heads to the Doc Adams Open hosted by UC Davis on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The first unattached athlete was Brooklan Rosales (Centennial/BC/Wyoming) in a time of 21:32 and former RoadRunner Erica Silva ran 23:39.

Some former Kern athletes also ran their first 5k of their lives. They are on the CSUB track athletes and have to run for CSUB in cross country.

One former Liberty sprinter has actually made the transition quite well. Julia Fitch (photo) had never raced beyond a 400 to my knowledge but made the traveling squad and has been improving all season long. Today she ran 22:31which is a good time and would have made her the second best runner for Liberty last year. I think the 800 is in her future.

Further done the field was Candice Nichols (South sprinter & triple jumper) and Brushay Wandick (Driller sprinter) both braved the distance and finished the 5k.

CSUB does not have men's squad but there was a men's 8k race. It was a close one between Pepperdine and Westmont with Pepperdine winning 29 to 31.

Several local runners competed in the 8k as Team Lightning:

• Ryan Lucker (Stockdale/CSUB) ran 26:02 for 8th
  
• David Bacus (West/UCSB) ran 26:21 for 10th
• Eddy Lee (CSUB) ran 27:05 for 16th
• Oscar Fuentes (East/Cal Poly) ran 27:21 for 21st

Running unattached were Ian Heiter (Taft/BC) in a time of 30:53 and 50 plus age grouper Cregg Weinmann ran 33:08.

Celis Places Second at Pepperdine

New Roadrunner Arianna Celis (see photo) took second at the Malibu Oceanside Open today at Pepperdine University. She along with her team mate Glassey (5th overall) transferred to CSUB this fall from Riverside CC and immediately made an impact for CSUB.

By coming in 2nd and 5th, they were able to break up the Pepperdine pack that would have gone first through fifth without them in the race. This duo recently came to town and ran the top two fastest times at the BTC Summer Series and look to be a big addition to the squad.

In 9th place was Judith Mata in a time 20:27 and former North High runner Cecilia Lopez (Fr) came in 15th in her first college race. Rounding out the scoring five was former East runner Lina Nunez (Sr) who ran 21:43 for 16th place.

I have run the Pepperdine course and it on the big lawn in front of the campus and it is hilly and mostly on grass the whole way so the times the ladies ran are very good for this early in the season.

Big props to Julia for running what I believe is her first 5k, I have watched her and her sister (Molly) running the sprints for Liberty but have never seen her run anything further than the 400. Good to see her make the traveling squad for cross country and i bet she gets better and better through the season. It will make her super tough in track too!

Coach Boyles was extremely happy with his squads performance on a tough course and thought the first time collegiate runners handled themselves well. he was also pleased that the squad was able to break up the Pepperdine runners in the standing too.

Their next meet is on Saturday, Sept, 12th at the Asics/UC Irvine Invite.

Conquering the Triple Threat

The CSUB PEAK Club will be hosting a Youth Triathlon on Saturday, June 6th at the CSUB Pool.

The mission of the PEAK Club is to advance the professional development of PEAK Majors by supporting participation in professional conferences at the state and national level. The club is also dedicated to the development of health and wellness in Kern County through promoting and assisting community physical fitness activities.


Late registration/race packet - 6:30 to 7:30am

Race starts at 8:00am

Cost is $25 for Individuals and $60 for the High School Relay Teams (Must be from same high school).

Age Groups are:

Junior - 7 to 10 who swim 50 yards, bike 2 miles and run 1/2 mile
Intermediate - 11 to 13 who swim 150 yards, bike 4 miles and run 1 mile.
Senior & Team Relay - 14 -18 who swim 400 yards, bike 8 miles and run 2 miles.
